    • Richard hi,

I’m kind of guessing you are an Orkney based Richard Porter and not raptor book Richard Porter who I studied Ecology and Animal Behaviour with in Brighton? If this is happening in Orkney please will you contact me privately direct – badseawatcher@gmail.com as I need the location. Shooting Rooks is an ignorant thing to do, on the whole they are beneficial to farming as their main food is insects, especially leatherjackets and beetle larvae. They can cause problems in autumn as they will eat barley from knocked down crop (they are not entirely innocent of knocking it down) but a bird scarer works well, as they are suspicious and cautious birds on the whole. Some folk who live near rookeries don’t like the noise, the poo is also irritating at times but hey this is a wonderful bird; intelligent, loads of fascinating behaviour, cooperative and deeply connected with the culture of country living.

I will check out the legal situation, as to be honest I’ve been wondering about it of late and not found out.

      Many thanks for the contact,

      Alastair
